During the First World War, approximately 15, 600 West Indians signed up to the British West Indies Regiment, including men from Jamaica, Barbados, The Bahamas, Guyana, Belize, Grenada, the Leeward Islands, St Lucia, St Vincent, and Trinidad and Tobago.
